What In the Isekai?

WHAT IN THE ISEKAI?

What in the World is Isekai and How Do I Get Into It?

What is Isekai?

“Isekai is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy light novels, manga, anime, and video games revolving around a normal person from Earth being transported to, reborn, or trapped in a parallel universe. Often, this universe already exists in the protagonist’s world as a fictional universe.”

When talking about anime, there are many Japanese terms that come up a lot when discussing it. Whether it be Shounen, Josei, Seinen or Ecchi, these subgenres of anime are pretty popular already. One term that has become increasingly popular in recent years is Isekai. But what is it? Isekai translates to “Another World” and in regards to fictional genres it describes a story that involves a character finding themselves in a different world world apart from their own. Dying and being reborn, summoned by other worldly magic, or being trapped by some sort of item/tool are some ways people find themselves lost in these worlds.

Concept

This concept isn’t unique to Japan, Western classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, and Neverending Story could all be considered Isekai stories. Stories of this nature aren’t even new in anime, some early examples of this concept would be The Vision of Escaflowne (’96) and Digimon (’99). Inuyasha for example, centres on the typical story of a typical girl suddenly being transported to a new world and thrust into a fantasy situation.

Within the Decade

More recently isekai has become a more popular theme in anime as the trend of light-novel adaptations has grown. Log Horizon, SAO, and Gate have really brought this type of story to the forefront. Since the inception of some of these popular animes and mangas, we’ve seen a whole range of isekai series spring up. All of which bring different ideas and new approaches to the standard format of what goes into the main storyline. With so many ways to be transported to another world, crazy and goofy stories pop up every now and then!

Some Popular Isekais

No Game No Life

While they are incredible gamers, Sora and Shiro lack the skills to accomplish anything meaningful in their current world. In fact, they’re so wracked with social anxiety that most of the time they can barely leave the house. Their lives change for the better when they get the chance to live in Disboard, a world where gaming determines every interaction and transaction.

There, they become wildly successful beyond anything they imagined possible in their old world, achieving royal status and uniting the warring factions of Disboard through gaming.

Overlord

When Momonga’s favorite MMORPG, Yggdrasil, is about to go offline, he decides to wait out the game’s last moments and stay logged in for as long as he can. But when the game is supposed to shut down, it doesn’t. Instead, the NPCs are coming to life, and Momonga has become his character, the wizard master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown. He’ll have to get used to his new life – and figure out how to run his guild for real.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

When a middle aged man named Satoru Mikami is randomly stabbed on the street, he’s reincarnated into another world – not as a wizard, a demon, or anything else a person would hope for, but as a slime! Luckily for Rimuru Tempest – that’s his new name – he’s not just any slime. He can absorb new skills from his environment and from his foes, giving him a seemingly endless array of abilities. While Rimuru could use those powers to do harm, he chooses instead to build community and help others – just as he tried to do through his company job on Earth.

Rising of the Shield Hero

It follows Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku who is suddenly transported to the world of Melromarc to fulfil a mission: he must help defeat the Waves of Catastrophe that are wrecking havoc on the world with the help of three other legendary heroes. Unfortuantely for Naofumi, he’s the Shield Hero, which means that he’s looked down on from the start. Worse, the one person who pretends to be willing to help him betrays him and destroys his reputation, forcing him to complete his mission alone if he ever wants to see his home again.

Konosuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!

After dying a laughable and pathetic death on his way back from buying a game, high school student and recluse Kazuma Satou finds himself sitting before a beautiful but obnoxious goddess named Aqua. She provides the NEET with two options: continue on to heaven or reincarnate in every gamer’s dream—a real fantasy world! Choosing to start a new life, Kazuma is quickly tasked with defeating a Demon King who is terrorizing villages. This series is definitely a laugh inducing series!

Personal Favorite Isekais

Log Horizon

In the blink of an eye, thirty thousand bewildered Japanese gamers are whisked from their everyday lives into the world of the popular MMORPG, Elder Tale, after the game’s latest update—unable to log out. Among them is the socially awkward college student Shiroe, whose confusion and shock lasts only a moment as, a veteran of the game, he immediately sets out to explore the limits of his new reality.

Shiroe must learn to live in this new world, leading others and negotiating with the NPC “natives” in order to bring stability to the virtual city of Akihabara. He is joined by his unfortunate friend Naotsugu, having logged in for the first time in years only to find himself trapped, and Akatsuki, a petite but fierce assassin who labels Shiroe as her master. A tale of fantasy, adventure, and politics, Log Horizon explores the elements of gaming through the eyes of a master strategist who attempts to make the best of a puzzling situation.

Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudou)

Western Restaurant Nekoya is a popular eatery located on a street corner in a Tokyo shopping district. Serving both traditional Japanese fare as well as Western dishes, this eating establishment is popular among Tokyo’s residents. But this seemingly ordinary restaurant is also popular with another type of clientele…

While the restaurant is thought to be closed on Saturdays, the truth is that on this special day each week, its doors are instead opened to the inhabitants of other worlds. From dragons and elves to fairies and mages, this restaurant has no shortage of strange customers. Nevertheless, the enigmatic chef known only as “Master” will be waiting to serve up their favorite dishes with a kind smile and keep them coming back for many more Saturdays to come.

Gate (Jieitai Kanochi Nite)

Offduty Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) officer and otaku, Youji Itami, is on his way to attend a doujin convention in Ginza, Tokyo when a mysterious portal in the shape of a large gate suddenly appears. From this gate, supernatural creatures and warriors clad in medieval armor emerge, charging through the city, killing and destroying everything in their path. With swift actions, Youji saves as many lives as he can while the rest of the JSDF direct their efforts towards stopping the invasion.

Three months after the attack, Youji has been tasked with leading a special recon team, as part of a JSDF task force, that will be sent to the world beyond the gate—now being referred to as the “Special Region.” They must travel into this unknown world in order to learn more about what they are dealing with and attempt to befriend the locals in hopes of creating peaceful ties with the ruling empire. But if they fail, they face the consequence of participating in a devastating war that will engulf both sides of the gate.
